Students in grades Sixth through Eighth have the opportunity to serve on School Student Council. Elected positions include President, Vice President, Secretary, Commissioners of: Finance, Assembly, Religious Activities, Publicity, Ecology, Spirit, Safety, Transportation, Boys Athletics, and Girls Athletics. Student Council meetings occur every other Thursday at 7:05 a.m.
Student Council is responsible for leading the Monday morning assemblies in the school gymnasium, reciting the Morning Prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, and announcing the daily news over the public address system including birthdays, sports scores, etc. At St. Mel School, a high priority is placed on community service with the goal of educating the whole child in an atmosphere of faith and academic excellence and to nurture a lifelong commitment to serving others. Student Council focuses their efforts on coordinating various school wide community service projects, organizing fun, family-oriented fundraising events such as Skate Night, and planning interactive activities for Red Ribbon Week and Catholic Schools Week.
Student leaders strive to build community on campus through assemblies, pep rallies, spirit days, and contests. Student Council officers serve as spiritual leaders for the school community by leading the Recitation of the Holy Rosary once a month for the entire school community and leading the daily Morning Prayer.
